Museum Oud Vriezenveen
Facts and practical information
The Historisch Museum Vriezenveen is located in the old town hall of the Overijsselse town of Vriezenveen, right in the center. The museum is owned by the municipality of Twenterand and is managed by the Vereniging Oud Vriezenveen.
The museum deals with the history of the municipality of Vriezenveen. Among other things, there is a section on the textile history of Vriezenveen, and documentation on the great fire which ravaged Vriezenveen on 16 May 1905, destroying 228 homes, the town hall and two churches. In addition, an old living room, a farmer's kitchen and a school class from long ago are on display. Stichting Stolpersteine Twenterand is also located here.
The museum has become known for its extensive Russian section. Here the story of the Rusluie, a group of Vriezenveen merchants who were able to sell their wares in Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries, and even established a Vriezenveen trading colony in St. Petersburg, is told. This section of the museum brings the history of the Rusluie back to life. The construction of the eastern bypass near Vriezenveen for the development Vriezenveen Zuidoost, the Rusluieweg, is a reminder of this period.
