Rijn en Lek, Wijk bij Duurstede
Facts and practical information
De Rijn en Lek is a corn mill in Wijk bij Duurstede in the province of Utrecht.
The Rijn en Lek was built in 1659 as a cattle mill. This makes it a very early example of the round stone windmill and therefore very unique as a structure. What is also very special is that the mill is the only mill in the Netherlands built on an old city gate. This is the so-called Leuterpoort which dates from the 14th century. The mill was later put into use as a corn mill and has always remained so. The mill has been restored several times and has survived several storm disasters, when the mill could barely be brought to a standstill. For sifting the flour into flour there is a beater column present. The current owner is the Association De Hollandsche Molen. A few volunteer millers run the mill every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon and grind grain using wind power.
