Facts About Fiordland skink
The Fiordland skink is a remarkable reptile native to the temperate forests of Fiordland on New Zealand's South Island. You can primarily find them on the mainland and along the rocky shores of various islands off the Fiordland coast. Unfortunately, their numbers have declined due to the introduction of predators. Today, Fiordland skinks are mostly found on foreshore rocks and boulder beaches, where they can survive without the threat of mammalian predators.
In 1988, conservationists made significant strides by relocating some of these skinks to Hāwea Island. Following the successful eradication of rats from another nearby island, the skinks naturally recolonized it. These conservation efforts have been crucial in ensuring the survival and protection of the Fiordland skink population.
