Popova Šapka is a renowned ski area situated near the city of Tetovo, in the picturesque Shar Mountains of North Macedonia. Established in the 1940s, Popova Šapka has long been a centerpiece of North Macedonian winter tourism, attracting visitors not only from the region but also from across Europe. The ski area is perched at an elevation of over 1,700 meters, with its highest lift reaching up to 2,500 meters, providing a generous vertical drop for adrenaline-packed descents.
The resort boasts more than 20 kilometers of ski runs, serviced by a network of lifts, including chairlifts and drag lifts. The terrain varies from gentle, tree-lined slopes ideal for novices, to challenging black runs that demand technical prowess. In addition to the groomed pistes, Popova Šapka is also celebrated for its off-piste opportunities, luring freeride enthusiasts with its deep powder and rugged mountain terrain.
In the warmer months, the area transforms into a hub for hikers and nature lovers, with trails winding through the alpine landscape offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. However, it is the winter season that truly brings Popova Šapka to life, with the ski resort typically operating from December to April, depending on snow conditions.
Facilities at Popova Šapka include ski schools, equipment rental shops, and cozy mountain lodges where visitors can unwind after a day on the slopes. The après-ski scene, though modest compared to larger European resorts, provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with local restaurants serving traditional Macedonian cuisine.
