Mount Samat National Shrine
Facts and practical information
The Mount Samat National Shrine stands as a poignant reminder of the valor and sacrifice of Filipino and American soldiers who fought during World War II. Perched atop Mount Samat in the province of Bataan, Philippines, this memorial complex is dedicated to the fallen heroes of the Battle of Bataan in 1942.
The shrine's centerpiece is the towering Memorial Cross, a colossal structure that reaches a height of 92 meters. This cross is not only a symbol of peace and heroism but also an observation gallery. Visitors can ascend to the arms of the cross via an elevator, where they are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
At the base of the cross lies the Colonnade, a marble-clad structure housing an altar, esplanade, and a museum. The museum presents a wealth of historical artifacts, photographs, and displays that narrate the harrowing tale of the battle and the subsequent Death March.
Inaugurated on April 9, 1970, Mount Samat National Shrine is not just a tourist destination but a hallowed ground for reflection and remembrance. Every year on Araw ng Kagitingan, or Day of Valor, the shrine becomes the focal point of national commemorative ceremonies.
