Cmentarz Komunalny, Cieszyn
Facts and practical information
The Municipal Cemetery of Cieszyn on Katowicka Street was started in 1891, when the cemetery at St. George's Church from 1884 was no longer sufficient for the city's needs. It is currently the city's largest necropolis.
The cemetery grounds cover an area of 6,94 ha with rectangular or square sections with numerous trees. In the oldest part the sections are marked with antique cast iron sectional plaques cast in Tøinec Ironworks. The main entrance to the cemetery leads through a decorative entrance gate in Austrian Baroque style with a dome, which housed a bell used for funerals until 1950. Two large reliefs depicting the "Entombment" and "Resurrection of Christ" are set into the side walls of the gate. The funeral chapel and the administration building are adjacent to the gate.
In the main alley there is a Grave of the Deserved, where the following are buried: Ludwik Brozek, Bronisław Czuma, Jan Foltyn, Józef Londzin, Karol Miarka, Gustaw Morcinek, Franciszek Popiołek, Paweł Stalmach, Ignacy Świeży, Maria Wardas and Wincenty Zając.
Nearby there is a grave monument of the mayor of Cieszyn Johann Demel von Elswehr in the shape of a catafalque with a coffin from 1897. On the cemetery there are also located the quarters of World War I soldiers and a mass grave of 81 victims of Nazi shootings in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Cieszyn. There are also graves of deceased sisters and brothers of orders in Cieszyn.
German inscriptions on the tombstones were destroyed.
In the new part of the cemetery the ashes of Gwido Langer - co-creator of the success of breaking Enigma - were placed on December 10, 2010.
