Ławeczka Henryka Raabego, Lublin
Facts and practical information
The bench of Henryk Raabe, the first rector of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, is located in Lublin on the square bearing the name of the patroness of the University, on the grounds of the UMCS campus. The author of the monumental sculpture is Benedykt Popek from the Masuria region of Podkarpacie.
The bench was unveiled for the first time on 30 March 2012 at 5 Maria Curie-Skłodowska Square, in front of the Rector's Office of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University. On July 7, 2012, the memorial was moved to the building, and placed at the entrance to the Faculty of Economics. The reason for this was the lack of necessary permissions, which were not requested by the authorities of the University. After two weeks of efforts to get the location approved, on 21 July 2012 the bench was finally unveiled in the square, next to the statue of the patroness of the university, unveiled in 1964, which was the work of Marian Konieczny.
Professor Henryk Raabe organized Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. He had previously been a professor at the Jagiellonian University and then at the University of Lviv. He directed the Lublin university from October 1944 to September 1948.
