Ławeczka pary Kaszubów - Jakuba i jego żony Elżbiety Scheibów, Gdynia
Facts and practical information
A pair of Kashubians on a bench is located in Gdynia at Kashubian Square. It was unveiled on September 30, 2006 and was created by sculptor and painter Adam Dawczak-Dębicki, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts and a former bank director.
The bench depicts a married couple, Jacob Scheibe, a reemigrant from America, who worked as fishermen, and Elizabeth, née Kurr.
In 1928 Jakub Scheibe erected a tenement house at Kaszubski Square designed by architect Wiktor Lorenz. At his wife's request he added a room on the top floor which overlooked the sea as far as the Hel Spit. When Jakub was fishing, Elżbieta would sit in this room and wait for his return. The tenement house has been preserved and stands next to the bench on the other side of Jana z Kolna Street. Members of the Scheibe family still live there.
The sculpture is in the style of a cheerful, sympathetic caricature. Protruding from Jacob's pocket is a roll of paper with the inscription: "Jacob, If you will build a little room for me on the top floor, I will see when you return from the sea - Elizabeth".
In May 2007 the sculpture was damaged by vandals. The city authorities handed it over to the author for repair.
