Jamaluddin Al-Afganieni Mosque in Gdańsk - is currently one of five active mosques in Poland, the only one with a minaret, and the only one in Gdańsk. It is part of the Muslim Religious Community in Gdansk which is one of eight communities in the country. The mosque is located on the VII Dwór estate at 17a Abrahama Street.
The temple was built thanks to the generosity of the Muslim community of the Tri-City, grants from Islamic countries and collections among students from Arab countries, who came to Gdansk in large numbers in the 1980s.
The foundation act for the construction was laid in 1984. The construction of the temple itself was completed in 1990. The works lasted six years, and the result was the third mosque in the country, and the first brick one. It is named after the poet and philosopher, the founder of pan-Islamism - Jamal ad-Din Al-Afghani.
Prayers are said five times a day: before sunrise, at noon, in the afternoon, after sunset and in the evening. The obligation to pray applies to worshippers from the age of ten. The facility is open to the public only on open days, and admission is permitted when accompanied by a guardian. All visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the prayer hall, and women are additionally required to dress modestly but without covering their hair.
After the September 11, 2001 attacks in the USA, the Gdansk mosque became the target of attacks by unknown perpetrators. One of the most recent such acts of vandalism took place in October 2013, previously in July 2012. Attacks on the mosque began to increase from late 2014 when there was an attempt to set it on fire. In the following years, the temple systematically fell prey to vandals who painted offensive and vulgar inscriptions on it.
