Kościół pw. Świętego Klemensa, Ustroń
Facts and practical information
Church of St. Clement the Pope and Martyr is a Roman Catholic parish church in Ustroń, Cieszyn Silesia.
The first mention of the Ustroń parish dates back to 1447. The church was then wooden and located on the present old Catholic cemetery. During the Reformation it fell into the hands of Evangelicals. It returned to the Catholic Church in 1654, as a branch church of the parish in Goleszów. At the end of the 18th century, due to the dilapidated condition of the building, it was decided to close it.
The break in activity lasted only one year - in 1784 a new, independent parish was created and the chapel of liquidated Jesuit orphanage was used as a temple. After its reconstruction into late baroque-classicist church, it was consecrated in 1788 - the first parish priest was former Jesuit, priest Franciszek Teodor Entzendorfer from Skoczów.
In 1837 a new brick tower was built in place of the previous wooden one, and in 1840 the nave and chancel were extended. In this shape the temple exists to this day.
The church building faces west with its chancel. It has a three-bay nave, in which and in the transept there are sagittal vaults with prominent gables. The windows are closed with segmental arches and the gable roof is currently covered with sheet metal. The quadrilateral tower with semicircular windows is covered with a domed cupola and has a clock.
In the last years of the 20th century some significant renovations were made - in 1997 the clock on the tower was replaced. The most interesting preserved elements include the baroque-classicist pulpit, baptismal font, picture of St. Clement from the 19th century, wooden Stations of the Cross from the late 19th century, and a Rieger organ with pneumatic traction from the early 20th century. In front of the church there are stone statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Joseph with the Child, made in the late eighteenth century by Waclaw Donay from Skoczow.
Adjoining the church to the north is the former Jesuit orphanage of 1740, partially demolished in the 1930s.
