Nowy Cmentarz Żydowski, Sandomierz
Facts and practical information
The new Jewish cemetery in Sandomierz - kirkut is located on Sucha Street. It was established between 1830 and 1846 on an area of about 2 morgens. Because it was overcrowded in 1928 it was expanded by one morga in northern direction. During World War II the cemetery was devastated and the bodies from mass graves were burnt in the summer of 1944. In the place where the ashes of the burnt bodies were buried in 1948 Sandomierz Jews who survived the Holocaust erected a monument designed by Jozef Pietraszewski. It has a shape of a pyramid, about 6 meters high, made of preserved matzevot.
In 1955 the devastated area of the former Jewish cemetery was handed over to the Technical School of Fruit Processing as abandoned property. A dormitory and sport facilities were built on the site. Nowadays a small part of the former Jewish cemetery has survived, its area is 0.12 ha. There are 144 matzevot left and a monument commemorating the murdered Jews.
