Fontanna Prozerpiny, Poznań
Facts and practical information
Proserpine Fountain - one of four fountains in the Old Market Square in Poznań, located in front of the Town Hall.
The first mention of wells in the Old Market comes from 1568, when the sculptor Michel Fleischer from Legnica ordered wooden figures of a lion and a deer for the well in front of the town hall and the tenement house no. 54. These figures were replaced in 1615 by statues of Apollo, Jupiter, Mars and Neptune, made by the sculptor Christopher Redll. In 1758 the city councillors commissioned Augustyn Schöps to build a fountain. The fountain was completed in 1766. Augustyn Schöps made it from sandstone in the Baroque style, referring to Greek mythology. The sculpture illustrates the scene of Proserpine's abduction by the ruler of the underworld. The four reliefs on the walls of the pool represent the elements: fire, air, water and earth, accompanied by the coat of arms of the city.
The fountain was restored in the 1990s.
On May 15, 2010 it was damaged by the fans of Lech Poznan celebrating the title of Polish Champion. After a month it was restored. Funds for the repair were collected by the fans themselves.
