St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków

St. Mary's Basilica, with its twin spires reaching skyward and intricate Gothic architecture, stands as a testament to Kraków's historical and cultural significance. Located in the heart of the city's Main Market Square, this church has become an emblem of Poland's former royal capital and a beacon for both pilgrims and tourists.

Constructed in the 14th century on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque church, St. Mary's Basilica is renowned for its stunning altarpiece carved by the German sculptor Veit Stoss – a masterpiece of late Gothic art. One of the basilica's most notable traditions is the Hejnał mariacki, a trumpet signal played every hour from the taller of its two towers. This historical five-note anthem breaks off mid-melody in honor of a 13th-century trumpeter who was shot in the throat while alerting the city to an impending Mongol attack.
