Powodzianka, Wrocław
Facts and practical information
Floodwoman - the monument by Wrocław sculptor Stanisław Wysocki commemorates the efforts of Wrocław citizens in fighting the flood of the millennium in July 1997. It depicts a woman carrying books. It was unveiled on the first anniversary of the flood.
The monument pays tribute to all the unnamed volunteers who, for dozens of hours, protected the city, its monuments and its heritage from the disastrous flood wave - just like the people rescuing the library resources of Wrocław University from flooding, endangered by the river flowing nearby. This effort proved to be successful - despite considerable material damage, the city's most valuable resources were not lost.
The monument is located at the eastern cape of Kępa Mieszczańska island, at the point where the Odra river forks into two arms: South Oder and North Oder, at the University Bridges, less than a hundred meters from the main building of the University of Wrocław.
