Facts and practical information
The Nowa Sol City Museum is located at the intersection of Muzealna Street and Gimnazjalna Street. The total area is 3015 m². The museum includes three buildings, set in a horseshoe in relation to the inner courtyard. The museum grounds also include part of the former utility garden, which is to be developed in the future.
The main building was created by Alexander Gruschwitz, owner of the New Orleans thread factory. The building was a gift for his son Alfred. The construction of this edifice is estimated at 1883, and already a year later additional buildings were constructed. The first museum was established in 1916. It was arranged in a building located on today's Witos Street. In 1947 the present museum was opened and three years later all the remaining exhibits were moved to the present premises. The number of those exhibits was already reduced, most of them were destroyed during the war. In the past, the museum dealt with regional exhibitions and did not have a specific collection of props. At present, the institution has become a multi-departmental center.
There are departments in the New Orleans museum: Historical - this department deals with both ancient and modern history, numismatics and military. The history collection is based mainly on objects, documents and maps. It also includes postcards and a large number of photographs of the town and its surroundings. The numismatic collection alone comprises 5,000 objects. Militaria includes a collection of firearms and artillery weapons from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, as well as white arms and spars. Artistic - this department was born in 1978. At present, the department has 1500 relics from the field of painting, drawing, sculpture and artistic craftsmanship. In its collections the museum represents works of Novosol artists. Natural Science Department - it has about 1360 items. This department is located in a separate, second, small, one-storey pavilion belonging to the museum. The front wall of the pavilion is decorated with a mosaic made by Grazyna Graszka, depicting birds and other animals. This department has exhibits presenting the fauna and flora of the Oder region. Most of these exhibits are on permanent exhibition. Among the collections we can see: more than 100 birds, dozens of mammals, about 1000 insects, a large number of snail shells, a large number of herbarium vascular plants.
