Pracownia Zegarów Wieżowych, Gdańsk
Facts and practical information
Tower Clock Museum, now the Gdansk Science Museum - a museum in Gdansk's Old Town, a branch of the Gdansk Museum.
It was established in 1996 as a branch of the Gdańsk History Museum. It was the result of an agreement between the city authorities, the museum management and the Order of Carmelite Fathers, who lent for this purpose the interior of the tower of their church dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria.
The Museum of Tower Clocks - the only one in Poland - collects and preserves clock mechanisms significant for this craft, which could no longer find suitable working conditions in their place of destination. Many of them were destroyed by wars, fires, in many cases the conditions in the towers changed. The gathered collection is representative for the whole period of watchmaking development from the 15th to the 20th century. Apart from it, the museum staff takes care of a number of antique clocks at their places of work all over Poland.
Museum employees are also involved in constructing new clocks. The most accurate pendulum clock, which is also the most accurate mechanical clock in the world, was constructed by employees of the Tower Clocks Museum in Gdańsk. It is more than ten times more accurate than other clocks, indications of the clock are within several dozen microseconds of deviation per day.
A pulsar clock was also created here. At the time of its installation it was the most accurate clock in the world and the first to record the passage of time based on a source of signals from outside the Earth. The pulsar signal makes it possible to improve the accuracy of atomic clocks tenfold.
In late 2016, a clock with the world's longest pendulum was launched at the museum's headquarters.
