Facts and practical information
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in Lwówek is located near the market square, on Pniewska Street.
The church was built in the second half of the 15th century and was rebuilt several times. At the beginning of the 16th century, the wooden structure was replaced by a brick one due to the foundation of the Ostroróg family. Both inside and outside the church is Gothic in style. The church is crowned with two towers. The smaller of them, over the presbytery, was covered with shingles after the renovation in 1776, the second one certainly existed before 1636, when it was damaged by fire.
The church is oriented, hall-like, with four naves and a spacious porch on the south. It is covered with cross vaults in the main nave and the presbytery and with star vaults in side aisles, the porch, the chapel and the sacristy.
Late Baroque interior design from the eighteenth century. Only single elements from the time of erection of the temple have survived.
In the main altar there is a painting of the Assumption. The polychrome paintings in the interior by Henryk Nositz-Jackowski date from 1929. Outside, by the southern porch, there is a stone sculpture of Mary Immaculate. A little to the north of the church there is St. Joseph's chapel, made of yellow brick, partially plastered. It is a former burial chapel of the Tyshkevich family. The chapel has the architectural form of a three-nave early Christian basilica.
The church was renovated in 1982-1983 and is surrounded by monumental lime trees.
