Góra Oliwna
Facts and practical information
Mount of Olives in Bolesławów - a group of 19th-century stone sculptures with depictions of sleeping apostles and a praying Christ located on a plateau on the slope of Zawada above the village of Bolesławów in the municipality of Stronie Śląskie. The group is located on the so-called Old Moravian Road, once an important road leading to Moravia, and is a former place of prayer.
The plateau is located at the northern end of the ridge at 647 meters above sea level and is visible from below as a small hill. A steep dirt road leads to the Mount of Olives, a worn landscape Way of the Cross marked with cement crosses from St. Joseph the Spouse Church. In places, the road is cut into the slope by a ravine several meters long. Its beginning is marked by a destroyed metal cross. At the very end, a small one-way stone staircase leads to the entrance. The sculptural representation refers to the biblical scene of the prayer in the Garden of Olives: The author of the sculptures is unknown. The group consists of five nearly life-size figures made of sandstone in the so-called naive style: an angel carrying a chalice placed on a pedestal in the center, a kneeling figure of Christ in a prayer pose on the right side, three figures of sleeping apostles placed slightly in front symmetrically and axially.
Formerly the figures were polychromed. They are set in a semicircle on a small, cleared area in the form of a two-level terrace, reinforced on the northern side with small retaining walls. The whole is surrounded by a wooden fence on concrete posts and a group of old trees: silver lime and sycamore. Nearby there is a large stone crucifix and benches for pilgrims.
The first renovation was done in 1873 by a painter from Ladek-Zdroj named Reimann. The sculptures underwent a thorough conservation in 2005-2007. Missing details were restored by the artist Ewa Bejer. The surrounding area was cleaned up, and the fence and benches were restored. The ceremonial opening after restoration with consecration took place on July 7, 2007.
