Rezerwat Czerwica
Facts and practical information
Czerwica Nature Reserve - a landscape nature reserve located within the Iława Lake District Landscape Park, near Iława, in the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Province, Susz Forest District.
The reserve was established in 1957 on the area of 7.42 ha to protect a colony of cormorants for scientific reasons.
The territory of the reserve includes two islands and a peninsula on the north-western shore of Lake Czerwica. A colony of cormorants and a gray heron has existed on the lake islands and the peninsula since 1934. In the reserve there were 28 nests on an old monumental beech tree, which is now fallen down. The largest number of nests in the colony was in 1955, over the years the number decreased to about 200 in 2009. A year later the birds left the reserve for unknown reasons.
In 2018, the area of the reserve was enlarged to 12.59 ha, its type was changed from faunal to landscape, and "protection of regenerative processes occurring in the abandoned black cormorant colony" was adopted as the conservation objective.
The reserve is covered with old-growth forests of sessile oak, beech and pine.
