Rezerwat Wiosło Duze
Facts and practical information
Wiosło Duże Nature Reserve - a forest nature reserve in the Kociewie region on the western bank of the Vistula River. It is located in the communes of Gniew in Pomorskie and Nowe in Kujawsko-Pomorskie. It was established in 1972 and covers an area of 29.88 ha. The aim of protection is preservation of xerothermic plant stands and fragments of natural forest complexes for scientific and didactic reasons. The stands of xerothermic plants are being replaced by shrubby and herbaceous vegetation.
Almost the whole area of the reserve is covered by four plant communities: two subcontinental oak-hornbeam subcompartments, Sedum telephium community and Acer negundo-Cornus sanguinea maple forest. Small non-forested fragments of the reserve are occupied by: thermophilous grassland from the Cirsio-Brachypodion pinnati association, meadow communities and herbs. On the flood terraces of the Vistula there are several shallow ponds with muddy bottoms, in which the dominant species is stiff hornbeam. Their banks are overgrown with reed communities.
During the inventory carried out in 2012, 265 species of vascular plants were found on the reserve, including 8 species under strict protection and 7 partially protected ones. The presence of 15 species of bryophytes was also found, including 5 partially protected ones: pinnatifid rocket, curly-leaved helleborine, broom-leaved helleborine, fennel-leaved helleborine, and clear beardtongue.
The nearest towns are Opalenie and Vidlice.
The part of the reserve situated in Pomeranian Province is under active protection, the part situated in Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province is under strict protection.
