Glade of Wykus
Facts and practical information
Wykus - a hill of the Suchedniowski Plateau, 5 km southwest of Starachowice with an altitude of 326 m above sea level, a major node of lowland trails. On the slopes of the mountain is the Wykus Nature Reserve.
Wykus was more than once a base for Polish partisans. During the January Uprising insurgents commanded by Marian Langiewicz were stationed here. During World War II there were camps of soldiers of the Polish underground, first under the command of Major Henryk Dobrzański "Hubal", then of the Home Army Partisan Group "Ponury" - Lt. cc. Jan Piwnik "Ponury".
On September 15, 1957, a chapel with a picture of Our Lady of Sorrows was unveiled at the site of the former camp to commemorate those who died fighting for their homeland. On its walls are placed 123 aliases of soldiers killed during the war. The chapel is surrounded by a wall with several hundred plaques with the names of the deceased soldiers from "Ponury" and "Nurt" groups.
To this day, in the forests around Wykus, there are numerous partisan graves, including a monument to 20 fallen soldiers from the radio station protection platoon of Jan "Inspector Jacek" Kosinski, a grave of "Warszawawiak" and a grave of Ludmila Bozena Stefanowska "Zjawa".
Every year on Saturday closest to the date of June 16th, ceremonies commemorating the fallen soldiers of the "Ponury" Home Army Partisan Groups are organized at Wycieś. The ceremonies are organized by the World Association of Home Army Soldiers - the environment of the Świętokrzyskie Groups of the AK "Ponury-Nurt" and the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association Swietokrzyski District. For some time they have been attended by representatives of provincial authorities and flags of the Świętokrzyskie police, whose patron since 1990 has been mjr cc. Jan Piwnik "Ponury" has been the patron of the police since 1990. During the ceremony on 14 June 2008 a field mass was celebrated by bishop Zygmunt Zimowski, the Ordinary of Radom diocese, the police authorities were represented by the then 1st Deputy Chief Constable of Police superintendent Arkadiusz Pawełczyk.
The chapel with the surrounding area within a radius of 30 meters is a place of national remembrance "Wykus" and is listed in the register of historical monuments.
Wykus is the starting point of the green hiking trail leading to Skarżysko-Kamienna. The E. Wołoszyn blue hiking trail from Wąchock to Cedzyna and the black hiking trail leading from Starachowice to Burzący Stok spring cross the mountain.
