Muzeum Pana Tadeusza, Wrocław
Facts and practical information
Pan Tadeusz Museum - part of the Ossolineum, presenting the Department's collections against a rich historical and literary background. It has been functioning since May 2016 in the tenement house Pod Złotym Słońcem in Wrocław.
It was opened thanks to support from the Norwegian and EEA funds from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, as well as Polish resources, and the generosity of the people of Wrocław. In 2019, The Lord Thaddeus Museum received an award from the jury of the European Museum of the Year Award.
The museum presents two permanent exhibitions. The first, The Manuscript of Pan Tadeusz, tells the story of the creation and reception of this extraordinary book, perhaps the last one, whose fragments are known by heart by almost all Poles. The only existing manuscript of Mickiewicz's masterpiece, surrounded by several hundred authentic manuscripts, old prints, graphics, paintings, sculptures and objects of everyday use, illustrated and commented by more than one hundred applications and multimedia presentations, is an invitation to talk about Polish culture and the history of the fight for an independent homeland. The second part of the permanent exhibition, "Mission: Poland", is an exhibition about the romantic idea of freedom transferred into the reality of the Second World War and post-war times. Based on the biographies of Jan Nowak-Jeziorański and Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, it presents the fate of the generation that grew up in a homeland free after 123 years of annexation, but in 1939 had to fight for independence and then for Poland's sovereign presence in modern Europe. Both witnesses of history donated to the Ossolineum priceless collections documenting their lives, the events in which they participated, as well as their art collections and archives.
From the beginning until the end of April 2021, Marcin Hamkało was the museum director. Since the beginning of May 2021, the museum has been headed by the acting deputy director of the Ossoline National Institute, Magdalena Musiał.
