Kościół św. Antoniego Padewskiego, Przemyśl
Facts and practical information
St. Anthony of Padua Church in Przemyśl - a church built in the 17th century in the Baroque style, used by the Franciscan Order called Reformati in Przemyśl.
In 1629 on the site of today's church a wooden church with a Franciscan monastery was built as a nobleman's foundation on the initiative of Father Bonaventura, a monk from Przemysl. It was located just outside the city walls, opposite the Lviv gate. During the city fire in 1637 it was completely burnt down. Thanks to the foundation of Hermolaus Tyrawski it was rebuilt as a brick church and consecrated in 1645.
After the invasion of the Rakoczy troops in 1657, the buildings were destroyed again. The monks were murdered and the tombs and altars were profaned.
Thanks to the efforts of Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, the church was rebuilt and additionally surrounded by a defensive wall with four towers, serving as a defensive barbican. The church underwent restoration in the 19th century, which included the removal of frescoes from the facade. Today, the church is 3 meters below street level and consists of a single-nave church connected to a monastery, whose cloisters surrounding a garth are used during services as a complement to the nave. The area of the former cemetery has also been preserved, surrounded by a defensive wall with a preserved tower, on which the stations of the Passion of Christ from the early 19th century are placed. In the basement of the monastery Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro was buried.
The church equipment comes mainly from the second half of the eighteenth century, except for the crucifix on the main altar by Thomas Hutter. On the cloisters there is a stone Baroque portal and baptismal font from the seventeenth century. The church is decorated with paintings made by Jozef Chodczynski, and renovated by Marian Stroinski. On the outside of the walls there is a 19th century monument commemorating the monastery guardian Krystyna Szykowski, who on 9 October 1672 gathered the inhabitants of Przemysl and under the cover of night victoriously attacked the Tatar camp near the village of Kormanice.
