Baszta Kaszana
Facts and practical information
Baszta Kaszana, Powder Tower - a cylindrical tower with a diameter of 5.6 meters and a height of 21 meters, built of brick, covered with a tent roof, part of the defensive walls of Trzebiatow. In the ground floor there is a prison dungeon, 4.7 meters high, with a new rectangular entrance hole on the inside. The original entrance to the tower, located in a rectangular niche, was on the 2nd floor, and was entered from a defensive porch on the wall. In the 2nd and 3rd storey on the outside there are irregularly spaced slit rifle holes. At the top, there are consoles supporting a former guard terrace. The whole was originally crowned with a turret with a brick cone.
Kaszana Tower was built in the first half of the 14th century to strengthen the defense in the corner of the city walls and as an observation point from the Rega River. Later it was used as a gunpowder warehouse. In the 15th century it was raised. At the beginning of the 19th century it was rebuilt and covered with a new roof. In the 19th century a gate was made next to the tower with a lintel leaning against the wall of the tower. The tower was rebuilt in 1994. It is open for sightseeing during summer holidays. The Historical Society Trzebiatow Chasby takes care of the monument.
It is known mainly from a legend, according to which in the 15th century one of the guards guarding the walls at night dropped a bowl with hot porridge from the tower. It fell on the head of one of Gryfino citizens preparing to storm Trzebiatow. This accident saved the town from a sneak attack.
In connection with the legend of Baszta Kaszana in Trzebiatow, every year during the summer the festival Feast of Porridge is held.
