Park na Kamiennej Górze, Lubań
Facts and practical information
Kamienna Góra - a hill in Luban, 283.5 m above sea level, belongs to the Zalipan Hills range. It is built of basalt rocks, mainly nepheline.
It is a remnant of Tertiary volcanoes. On its top, among basalt quarries, a 14-hectare park was established in the second half of the 19th century. There are interesting geological forms such as volcanic bombs or basalt columns 10-15 meters high. There are also numerous natural monuments in the park, such as the Herman ash tree with a circumference of 298 cm and the Francis sycamore with a circumference of 281 cm. In the park, there is an amphitheatre and the so-called Mountain House from 1824, rebuilt in 1909.
There are educational trails on Kamienna Góra - the Trail of Extinct Volcanoes and the Trail of Natural Monuments.
During World War II, an air-raid shelter and, most likely, a field hospital were built under Kamienna Góra. Its existence was discovered in 2011. The total length of the excavated galleries is estimated at 1000 meters, and they are located 20 to 30 meters underground. On March 10, 2018, an exploration group drilled several boreholes, which confirmed the existence of underground corridors. They are partially flooded.
At the foot of Kamienna Góra there is a cemetery for Polish and Soviet soldiers who died during the fights for the liberation of the city in 1945.
