Cmentarz wojenny nr 125
Facts and practical information
War cemetery no. 125 - Zagórzany - Austrian war cemetery from the First World War built by the War Graves Division of the C. and K. Military Commandery in Krakow on the territory of its district IV Luzna.
It is located in the eastern part of the village of Zagórzany in Gorlice County, in Gorlice Municipality of Lesser Poland Province.
The cemetery was built on a narrow promontory with steep, several meters high rocky slopes, cutting into the valley of the Moszczanka Creek, a tributary of the Ropa River, from the north. At the foot of the hill Austrian engineers built a small retaining wall to protect the rocks from a landslide. A traverse path, also built by the Austrians, reinforced with a concrete curb leads to the cemetery. At its beginning, the original cemetery information post has been preserved. The entrance gate is a lattice of metal bars, between columns made of sandstone blocks. It is located in the lower part of the necropolis. The cemetery is fenced. A concrete openwork fence has been installed between stone block posts. A bench built of concrete and stone is mounted to the right of the entrance.
The necropolis is a long structure, narrow in the form of a rectangle in the lower part, and passing around the monument in the shape of a circle.
Located in the upper part of the cemetery, the monument has the form of a tall, four-wall obelisk standing on a pedestal, built of stone blocks. On each of its walls there is a large concrete cross. There are no inscriptions on the monument. Three stone benches were built into the fence around the monument. Only on the tombstones of German soldiers did the name plates remain.
On both sides, along the fence 149 Russian soldiers were buried, in front of the monument 9 Austrian soldiers and around the monument 32 German soldiers. They died in the period: end of 1914 to May 1915, also during the Battle of Gorlice.
The building was designed by Anton Müller.
