Pomnik żołnierza Armii Czerwonej
Facts and practical information
Monument to a Red Army soldier in Starzyński Dwór - a monument to a Red Army soldier located in Starzyński Dwór.
Some sources indicate that it was made in the 1950s, others that it was designed by Gdańsk artist Wawrzyniec Samp in the 1970s.
It depicts a seated soldier, unarmed, wearing a uniform and a cap, with his head lowered and his fist clenched behind his back. It was erected in memory of the POWs who died here - soldiers of the Red Army who worked on the von Grass family's estate during the war and were kept in the barn that was next to the place occupied by the monument today. The cause of their death is unknown; according to one version, they were burned by retreating Germans in the barn.
For many years the object deteriorated, devoid of any inscription explaining to whom it was dedicated. In 2005 the monument was restored and a plaque was placed under it with the inscription: "To the martyred soldiers of the Red Army - prisoners of the Nazi regime 1942-1945".
In 2018, the Pomeranian Voivode initiated preparatory proceedings for the decommunization of the monument, which, due to the anti-war overtones of the monument, was met with criticism from the media, residents, and municipal authorities. The Gdańsk branch of the Institute of National Remembrance also expressed its opposition.
