Kościół Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego w Tarnowie, Tarnów

Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross - historic, baroque conventual church of the Bernardines, located in Tarnów at 13 Bernardyńska Street.

It was built in the years 1752-1776, outside the city walls, on the site of an earlier wooden church, founded by Barbara and Paul Sanguszko. Originally it was intended for the Bernardine Sisters, whose convent adjoined the church on the south side and bore the name of St. Barbara. A decree issued by Emperor Joseph II in 1781 abolished the Bernardine convent and in 1789 replaced it with the Bernardine Fathers, who had remained in a nearby monastery at the Church of Our Lady of the Snows.

In 1828 the church was consecrated again and received its present name. It is now a branch church of the cathedral parish.

The Bernardine Church is a single-nave, oriented, brick church with a narrower, rectangular presbytery and an octagonal bell tower on the western side. The church's interior is covered with barrel vaults with lunettes. The interior equipment is uniform in style, Baroque and Neo-Baroque. The main altar, from the 19th century, has a Baroque crucifix in the main field with figures of Mother of God and St. John the Evangelist painted in the background.
