Pałac Sapiehów
Facts and practical information
Sapieha Palace in Wielen - a historic palace, located in Wielen, in Czarnkowsko-Ttrzcianecki County, Greater Poland Province.
The Baroque palace in Wielen was probably erected in the place of a defensive medieval castle. It was erected by the then owner of the Wielen estate, Piotr Sapieha, Voivode of Smolensk, married to Joanna Sulkowska. The architect of the palace was Karol Marcin Frantz, the court architect of the Sulkowski family. It was supposed to be a quadrilateral, four-winged residence with an inner courtyard. However, the construction of the palace was not completed in its entirety. It was possible to build two wings, the southern and western, and partially the northern and eastern, which were demolished in the eighteenth century. Under Piotr Sapieha a park with alleys decorated with stone sculptures was also designed.
At the end of the 18th century the palace passed into the hands of Frederick von Blankensee. The next owner of the estate, in the years 1855-1945, was the von Schulenberg family. At the end of World War II the palace was burned down and for years fell into ruin, despite that the elevation has been preserved in good condition. Pilasters supported on a rusticated base reach the frieze and cornice, and a triangular pediment with the von Schulenberg coat of arms crowns the triaxial risalit of the front elevation.
The palace complex includes a gate, an outbuilding from 1885, an orangery, a gardener's house, a historic cemetery with a chapel-mausoleum of the von Blankensee and von Schulenberg families, and a park. After World War II, the park stand was destroyed. Originally there grew native species of trees, such as: plane, maple, beech, oak, alder, lime.
The forestation of the park also includes: black cherry, small-flowered chestnut, Douglas fir, and Tatarian dry bush.
The park was also decorated with pergolas overgrown with vines and avenues: linden, birch and spruce.
