Góra Ossona, Częstochowa
Facts and practical information
Mount Ossona - the highest hill within the administrative boundaries of Częstochowa, located in the Mirów district, in the Częstochowa Upland. There is a limestone rock on the top.
The hill consists of two parts: the natural eastern part and the western part, which was artificially built for the industrial needs of the nearby Częstochowa Steelworks. Inside the hill, there are three huge concrete halls - the remains of the former pumping station, built in the 1950s for the needs of Huta Częstochowa. The pumping station is also reminded by the remains of the dome, which collapsed in 2011 and the remains of industrial buildings located in the western part of the hill.
Near the mountain there used to be a glider school and a glider airfield, founded in 1946 by Edward Osson. It is commemorated by a memorial plaque built into the limestone rock. Above the plaque there is also a statue of the Virgin Mary.
Since 1975, the Academic Equestrian Club has had its headquarters on Osson.
From the hill you can see the panorama of Czestochowa with its industrial plants in the foreground and the characteristic Jasna Gora Tower on the horizon, as well as a dense forest complex stretching between Czestochowa, Kusiagi, Olsztyn and Poraj. Other landmarks include the picturesque castle ruins in Olsztyn and the church tower in Rêdziny. When the visibility is good, you can see a radio and television mast in Klepaczka and two chimneys of the power plant in Belchatow. The most distant visible object is Babia Góra.
