Kościół św. Jadwigi
Facts and practical information
St. Jadwiga Church - a historic, neo-Gothic parish church of St. Jadwiga parish located in Racibórz-Markowice. It was built between 1874-1877 in place of former wooden temple.
The first wooden temple in Markowice existed already in 1247, when the local parish was founded. The size of the building is unknown. The existence of a wooden parish church in Markowice is confirmed by data about the Opole archdeaconry from 1447. In 1623, after the previous church burned down, a new, also wooden church was built in its place. It was a log building, oriented with high shingled roofs. It had a tower with a square plan, narrowing towards the top and ending with a pointed roof. In the upper part, at the height of the nave's roof, where the bells hung, the tower was wider. The nave was square, with a small tower with a little bell on its roof. Behind the nave was the chancel, longer than the nave, with a sacristy adjoining on the north side.
In the years 1874-1877, thanks to the initiative of the then parish priest, Teodor Neumann, a new brick church was built in place of the wooden church. The new building was constructed in neo-Gothic style, in the shape of a cross with a transept covered with a ceiling, to which a lower, pentagonal, vaulted chancel was added. On the western side, a slender tower was built with a portal, ogival windows with masquerades, a balustrade in the upper part and an octagonal gable topped with a pyramidal tin cupola. Although the work was completed in 1877, the church was not consecrated until six years later. In 1945, the church was severely damaged due to warfare. On February 11, 2008, the church was entered in the register of monuments.
