Góra Pięciu Kopców
Facts and practical information
Five Mounds Mountain - a place on the northern ridge of the Pilska Mountain in the Pilska Mountain Group in the Beskid Żywiecki. It is located in the Babia Góra-Three Mounds Ridge, through which runs the Polish-Slovakian border and the Great European watershed separating the catchment area of the Baltic Sea from the Black Sea. It is a rare case that the main ridge and main watershed do not run here through the highest peak, which is Pilsko, but through a lower plateau on its northern ridge.
The Mount of Five Mounds forms a vast summit platform, similarly to Pilsko, partly overgrown with dwarf pine and partly with high mountain pastures and covered with rock rubble. After World War II it was the highest point accessible to tourists from Poland; ascent of Pilsko was forbidden and was severely punished as crossing the state border. Later a tourist border crossing was established here. Nowadays the Mount of Five Mounds is a junction of tourist trails, and the ascent from it to Pilsko is free of any restrictions. The panorama is a bit different than from the Pilsko peak; better on the northern side, worse on the southern one.
Between the Mount of Five Mounds and Pilsko there is one of the highest springs in the Beskid Żywiecki at an altitude of 1550 m. From the tourist trail in the middle of the climb from the Mountain of Five Mounds to Pilsko go right about 20 m on a grassy path among dwarf pine. The spring flows out of a crack between rocks and its water soon disappears in the grass.
Under the northern slopes of the Five Mounds Mountain there is a PTTK mountain hostel on Hala Miziowa and 3 pastoral pastures: Hala Miziowa, Hala Cebulowa and Hala Słowikowa.
