Bolesław Chrobry Statue, Wrocław
Facts and practical information
Monument to Bolesław Chrobry in Wrocław - equestrian monument to Bolesław Chrobry designed by Dorota Korzeniewska, Maciej Albrzykowski and Grażyna Jaskierska-Albrzykowska, erected in Wrocław on Świdnicka Street and unveiled on September 15, 2007.
The monument is the first equestrian monument in postwar Breslau, was created in place of the monument of Emperor Wilhelm I, which stood before 1945. Boleslaw the Brave holds in his hand the spear of St. Maurice. The pedestal is encircled by a bronze ribbon with texts in Polish, German and Czech, a map of Europe from the year 1000 and reliefs of Pope Sylvester II, Otto III and St. Adalbert.
The monument was created on the initiative of three people: Krzysztof Wojcik, Tomasz Kabat and Krzysztof Mironowicz, founders of the Pro Wratislavia Foundation. Together with the pedestal it is about 10 meters high; the king's figure with his horse, cast in bronze, weighs about 6.5 tons. The reason for building the monument of the Brave in Wrocław was the fact that thanks to this king a bishopric was established here in the year 1000, which made the city the capital of the region and accelerated its development.
Historians point out that the horse of the Brave is not a variety found in early medieval Europe. However, it is not, as the authors claim, a realistic sculpture, but a figurative vision.
