Monument to French Prisoners of War - monument commemorating French prisoners of war from the wars of 1870-1871 and 1914-1918 who died in German captivity. Located in the southern part of the Citadel, on Armii Poznańska Street, to the left of the stairs leading to the Monument to Heroes.
The monument in the form of an obelisk of granite blocks, surrounded by a wall, commemorates the 1,333 French soldiers resting in a grave at its foot. The ashes were brought here from all over the city and the surrounding area. The remains of three soldiers from Napoleon's army, brought from the vicinity of Gniezno, also rest here. One of the plaques commemorates six French prisoners beheaded in Poznan in 1940-1943.
The monument was unveiled in 1934 in the presence of Jules Laroche - the French ambassador in Poland, the staff of the French consulate, Roger Adam Raczynski - the governor of Poznan, Cyril Ratajski - the president of Poznan and general Kazimierz Dzierżanowski. After World War II, the monument deteriorated. It was thoroughly renovated in 2013.
