Park 3 Maja, Łódź
Facts and practical information
3 Maja Park - a historic Lodz park located in the area of Kopcińskiego and Malachowskiego Streets, bounded on the south by the railroad tracks belonging to the Lodz regional railroad and on the east by Baden-Powell Park.
Founded in 1915, the park is a remnant of the city forest, which used to be a part of the Lodz Forest. The former municipal forest used to cover an area three times larger than today: from the south it reached as far as Rokicińska Street. During World War I, most of the trees located south of the railroad line, built in 1864, fell prey to locals looking for firewood. After the war, the remnants of the forest located north of the railway tracks were transformed into a park. Its western part was extensively rebuilt, including a youth soccer field and a playground. The eastern part of the park was also modified and equipped with numerous sports facilities. From 1923 until the outbreak of World War II, the park had numerous recreational functions and sport functions.
In 1928 the park was enriched with a pond, soon a Jordan's garden was built and another playground for children. For the next changes we had to wait until 1955: the sports facilities located in the eastern part of the park were fenced, and the embankment for the stands was built. At the beginning of the 21st century a modern sports hall was put into use at the Sports and Recreation Centre.
Currently, the park has similar functions as when it was established: numerous sports facilities and recreational facilities, as well as walking alleys are vibrant with life, being a place of rest and recreation for the local residents. Currently, the park covers an area of 23.5 hectares, and two of its trees have been declared natural monuments. It is also the seat of the youth sports club MKS Łodzianka, and the MOSiR hall is the place where Widzew Łódź basketball players play their home games.
On June 6, 2014, the park was added to the Register of Historic Places.
