Wzgórze Polskie, Wrocław
Facts and practical information
Brickmaker Bastion - a non-existent fragment of the fortifications of the city of Wrocław, located in the northeastern part of the outer wall belt surrounding the New Town in Wrocław. The bastion was built in 1585 in the place where earlier one of the bastions flanking the Brickmaker Gate was located.
The bastion was designed in the New Italian system by Hans Schneider von Lindau, an architect, builder and fortificator of several cities in Pomerania and Silesia. It was equipped with casemates, in the later period it was also equipped with ravelin and cavalry.
After the removal of the city fortifications by order of the French victors after 1807, the bastion was turned into a viewing hill, which became part of the promenade; the casemates were filled in and all military equipment was removed. Later, the hill was named Holtei Höhe - "Holtei Hill" - after the writer and actor Karl von Holtei, and a monument with his bust was erected on top. After 1945, it was renamed Polish Hill and is located in the quadrangle of today's Garncarska, Purkyniego, Promenada Staromiejska and Xawery Dunikowski Boulevard, which runs along the Oder River.
