Krzyż na Bruszni, Kielce

Facts and practical information
Cross on Brusznia - a metal cross standing on the Brusznia hill in Kielce, commemorating the place where the January Uprising insurgents met on the night of January 22-23, 1863, planning an attack on the Russian army under Colonel Czengery stationed in Kielce.
Measuring 30 meters, it was erected in June 2017. Previously, crosses were erected at the site five times - the first was temporary, the next two fell apart due to damage caused by the passage of time, the fourth was blown over by a windstorm, and the fifth, due to its poor condition, was dismantled and replaced with a metal one.
In 1916, on the 53rd anniversary of the January Uprising, a stone mound was raised on Brusznia and a birch cross erected. A year later, on the initiative of the 1st Kielce Scouting Troop named after Colonel Czachowski, a new large wooden cross was erected, which was consecrated by Father Dr. hm. Jan Mauersberg. It survived until 1937, when on the 25th anniversary of the Kielce Scouts, priest Antoni Źrałek consecrated a new 28-meter high larch cross. The cross was also a place of scouting celebrations, because it was under this cross that the first underground meeting of the Grey Regiments took place in 1940.
In 1988 on the initiative of Kielce scouts a fir cross was put in place of the existing one, which was consecrated by Bishop Mieczyslaw Jaworski. It was 19,67 m high.
In 2003, on the initiative of the Pilsudczycy Union, a plaque was installed with the following inscription: "To the memory of the heroes of the 1863 uprising this cross was erected". In mid-January 2007 the cross was blown over by a windstorm. Half a year later, on the 90th anniversary of the first cross, on the initiative of the local people, scouts and with the support of the city authorities, a 24-meter cross was erected. A commemorative plaque was also installed, and the crown of thorns, which is the surviving element of the 1917 cross, was restored.
