Wodospad Ciężkowicki, Siemiechów
Facts and practical information
Witches' Waterfall or Ciężkowicki Waterfall - waterfall in the Ciężkowicki Gorge, also called Witches' Gorge in the town Ciężkowice in Małopolskie voivodeship. It is located in the mesoregion Ciężkowickie Foothills and is a big tourist attraction.
Access to the Ciężkowice Gorge and the Witches' Waterfall is on the left side of the road from Ciężkowice to Staszkówka. At the entrance to the gorge there is a small parking lot, camping place for tourists and a wooden gate. The blue tourist trail leads to the canyon. This is the same trail that leads through the Skamieniałe Miasto nature reserve - it is located just to the right of the mentioned road. There is a path leading down to the Witches' Canyon, secured with railings. The gorge begins just after the footbridge on a tributary of the Ostruszanka stream. After walking about 45 it ends with a vertical rock wall several meters high, from which a waterfall falls.
It is a stepped waterfall with two thresholds made of Ciężkowice sandstone. In total it is 14 m high. Only the lower threshold is visible from the gorge, the upper part of the waterfall is invisible. The water falling from the thresholds carved typical evaporative basins in the sandstone. The amount of falling water is small, sometimes during a longer drought the stream dries up completely. However, the height of the waterfall and bare rock walls of the ravine are impressive. The waterfall looks especially impressive after a heavy rainfall. In winter it forms an icefall.
The name of the waterfall is connected with a legend, according to which witches and devils hold their Sabbaths in this gorge.
