Kościół pw. Ścięcia Głowy św. Jana Chrzciciela
Facts and practical information
Church of Saint John the Baptist - a historic Roman Catholic church in Pyzdry, Września County, Greater Poland Province.
Together with the former Franciscan monastery it is one of the three preserved monuments of Franciscan architecture from the Middle Ages in Greater Poland. The church has a fourteenth-century Gothic character, despite visible Baroque elements. In the interior there is a sail vault, created after the destruction of 1768. An unknown architect of the seventeenth-century reconstruction built the inner wall pillars, and double rows of windows.
The church was first mentioned in 1277 and was destroyed in 1331 by the Teutonic Knights. The existing brick buildings of the church and monastery were built around 1339 on the initiative of King Casimir III the Great. Another fire destroyed it in 1589, and its reconstruction took place in 1596 thanks to the local gentry. After the Swedish War, the monastery was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1690, giving it its present quadrilateral form with an inner courtyard. The towers were erected during another reconstruction in the years 1735-1756. Thorough renovations were carried out after the war damages in 1768, and in the years 1852-1854. As a result of post-war repressions in 1864, the monastery was dissolved, and the monastery was given to diocesan priests. Probably in the seventeenth century a chapel of Our Lady of Consolation was built on the northern side of the nave, integrated into the wing of the monastery. In the second half of the eighteenth century, the tower was erected and the façade of the temple was rebuilt. In 1864 the Russian authorities abolished the monastery. Around 1910 the interior of the church was renovated according to the project of Aleksander Przewalski.
Currently, the temple serves as a branch church of the parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while the former monastery houses, among others, the Pyzdria Land Museum and a library.
