Church of the Sacred Heart
Facts and practical information
Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Lobez is a Roman Catholic parish church in Lobez, West Pomeranian Province. It belongs to the Lobez deanery.
The temple was founded in the 15th century by the Bork family. When after the Trzebiatow Sejmik the Protestants took possession of the church, Faustyna Bork built a chapel for the Catholics outside the walls of Lobez. Over the centuries of its existence, the temple was plagued by fires. After one of them the building was repaired in the years 1829-1831. Then, in 1831, a three-storey tower made of erratic boulders, in neo-Gothic style and topped with an octagonal cupola was added to the body of the nave from the west.
After the destruction of World War II the building was rebuilt in 1949 thanks to the personal commitment of parish priest Wladyslaw Faron. It was consecrated for Catholic worship on 8 October 1948 by Father Franciszek Okoński. In the years 1972-1974 the church was re-gothicized and modernized. In the chancel there are five contemporary stained glass windows, St. Faustina, Blessed Father Michael Sopoćko and four biblical scenes in sgraffito technique. Under the windows of the nave on both sides are frescoes from 1969 depicting scenes from the New Testament. In the church there are relics of Blessed Faustina and John Paul II, who in 1962 was in Lobez for a short time and visited the temple during a canoe trip. High above the rainbow arch is a medieval crucifix, miraculously found during the reconstruction of the temple.
