Juliusz Słowacki, Wrocław
Facts and practical information
Juliusz Słowacki Monument in Wrocław - a monument commemorating the Polish national bard, Juliusz Słowacki. It is located in Juliusz Słowacki Park on Juliusz Słowacki Avenue. The Old Town Promenade also runs here.
The monument was made according to the model, which was a sculpture by Waclaw Szymanowski. The sculpture was made in 1909. Afterwards, it was brought to Wroclaw, where it was purchased in the Wroclaw Desa. As the copyrights to the work had expired due to the passage of time, it was possible to adapt it for the construction of the monument.
Initially the author and the first initiator of the idea of building a monument in Wrocław dedicated to Juliusz Słowacki was "citizen" Tadeusz Wojciechowski, but his appeal to the Wrocław authorities of that time was ignored. The idea was revived in 1971 by the Society of Wrocław Lovers. Then a collection of money was organized and the matter fell silent. The idea was suspended until 1981, when the Social Committee for the Construction of the Juliusz Słowacki Monument was established. In 1982 an attempt was made to choose the project of the monument by announcing a competition, but this method failed and finally the sculpture of Wacław Szymanowski was chosen as the prototype of the monument, its adaptation being carried out by Andrzej Łętowski. In 1983 a plaster specimen was made in 1:1 scale, and in 1984 the production of the pedestal was completed and the finished statue was transported to Wrocław. The ceremonial unveiling of the monument was performed by Professor Jan Dobraczyński. The ceremony was attended by representatives of city authorities and city residents.
The method of transportation of the finished statue is also interesting. The transport of the statue from the factory to the place of installation in 1984 was as follows: first the finished statue was transported by truck from the factory to the Port of Gliwice, then by barge the statue was transported along the Odra Waterway to the City Port of Wroclaw: Among others, the monument was located in the Market Square next to the Aleksander Fredro Monument, in Solny Square, in Feliks Dzierżyński Square there was a welcoming of the monument by students from the 9th Juliusz Słowacki High School and others, the monument was then transported by truck to the place of installation and placed on the finished pedestal.
The pedestal was made of Lower Silesian syenite, and the statue, about 2.5 meters high and weighing 1400 kg, was made of bronze.
There is the 9th High School named after Juliusz Słowacki in Wroclaw. There are organized celebrations related to the bard: for example, the rally of Juliusz Słowacki's school family, juliuszada; they also include celebrations related to the Juliusz Słowacki Monument.
