Muzeum Jana Kasprowicza, Zakopane
Facts and practical information
Willa "Harenda" - Jan Kasprowicz's house in Zakopane, Harenda, on the slopes of Gubałówka. The poet purchased it in 1923 from the English painter Winifred Cooper for money earned from translating Shakespeare. Today it houses the Kasprowicz biographical and literary museum. The name of the villa came from the "Pod Arendą" inn located in Czarnowąsach near Opole. Later Kasprowicz changed the name adding the highlander suffix h. In this inn, the future poet visited during his school education in 1881.
The poet lived in Harenda for only three years and died in 1926. In 1933, thanks to the efforts of his widow Maria Kasprowicz, Kornel Makuszyński and Leopold Staff, a granite mausoleum designed by Karol Stryjeński was built next to the house, to which the poet's ashes were transferred.
On the initiative of his wife Maria, a Kasprowicz museum was created in the villa in 1950. In 1964 the Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Twórczości Jana Kasprowicza was established at the museum, which still organizes meetings, lectures and poetry evenings devoted to the poet.
By the will of Kasprowicz's widow, the museum has preserved the appearance of the house from the time of the poet's life. Visitors can see three rooms: a dining room, a living room and a bedroom. The closed part housed Kasprowicz's rich library, collected by him in Lviv. After the poet's death, his wife Maria transferred the collection to Poznan, where it was completely burned in a fire. It is not known whether a catalog of the books survived, but it is certain that valuable rarities were destroyed. In the museum you can see the Kasprowicz family memorabilia, household items, paintings and the remains of the book collection. On the first floor of the house there is a gallery of paintings by Wladyslaw Jarocki, professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, arranged by the poet's daughter Anna Kasprowicz-Jarocka.
