Dąb „Bolesław”
Facts and practical information
Bolesław oak - a monumental oak, growing near the village of Bagicz, in the municipality of Ustronie Morskie, about 15 km southeast of Kołobrzeg. Its age is probably about 400 years, although according to some sources, it is said to be even 800 years old - this is how it was recorded by the Directorate of State Forests: "The oldest pedunculate oak Boleslaw growing near Kolobrzeg is "only" over 800 years old...". The circumference measured at a height of 1.3 m from the ground was 700 cm, the height was 32 m, and the diameter of the crown was 20 m. The Warcislaw oak grows near it.
The information about the alleged age of Bolesław is not confirmed in the literature - according to the authors of the 2016 "Trees of Poland", foresters by education, the age of the oak was not measured by dendrochronology methods, and they themselves estimate the age of the tree at the mentioned 400 years. This can be justified, among others, by the fertile habitat, exceptionally favorable for oaks.
Before the Bolesław oak was "rediscovered" by Hieronim Kroczyński, the Chrobry oak from Piotrowice was considered the oldest oak in Poland - 760 years old. The best known oak named Bartek from Bartkow is 670 years old.
On August 19, 2000 the oak received the name "Boleslaw" to commemorate king Boleslaw the Brave, who founded the bishopric in Kolobrzeg in 1000.
During the night from May 31 to June 1, 2016, the oak was knocked down by a windstorm. The remains of Bolesław will not be removed, it will remain in place as a natural monument, and next to it the same oak will be genetically planted from shoots taken in 2014 by scientists from the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kórnik.
