Church of the Assumption, Rzeszów
Facts and practical information
Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - a Catholic sanctuary of the Latin rite in Zalesie, Rzeszów.
The object of worship is an image painted by an unknown artist, most likely in the 18th century. The painting depicts Mary with the Child Jesus in the iconic style. On the back of the painting, there is an inscription: We commend ourselves to your love, Virgin Mother of God. The church was built as a Greek-Catholic church in 1889 on the site of earlier wooden Orthodox churches that had existed in Zalesie probably since the fifteenth century or earlier. After World War II most families of this faith were resettled near Lviv. In 1975 the parish priest Jozef Sowinski adjusted the church to the Latin rite.
