Parque da Ponte, Braga
Facts and practical information
Parque da Ponte, or Parque de São João da Ponte, is an urban park in the city of Braga, Portugal. The park, located at the end of Avenida da Liberdade, is divided into four parts, the outer part, the inner part, the sports complex and the camping site. The park is limited to the North by the East River and Avenida Dr. Francisco Pires Gonçalves, to the East and South by Monte do Picoto and Avenida do Estádio, and to the West by the Braga Exhibition Park and the East River.
The Park has 24 thousand m2 and is composed, in the center, by the Saint John the Baptist Chapel and its porch, and also by the chapel's yard, a cruise, a social building, a bandstand and a kiosk, alminhas and a lake.
With an architectural project by Architect Sérgio Borges and landscape architecture by Architect Carlos Arantes, the intervention was awarded the 2011 IHRU, a national-level award for Public Spaces.
The Park was born from the expropriation, in 1911, of Quinta da Mitra, the former property of the archbishops of Braga.
The toponym comes from the old medieval bridge over the Este River that used to carry traffic to Guimarães.
