25 de Abril Bridge, Lisbon

Spanning the Tagus River in the heart of Lisbon, the 25 de Abril Bridge stands as an emblematic landmark of Portugal's capital city. Reminiscent of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge with its deep red color, this suspension bridge connects the city of Lisbon to the municipality of Almada. The bridge was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, and was originally named Salazar Bridge after the then-Prime Minister of Portugal. However, following the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, which overthrew the Estado Novo regime, the bridge was renamed to commemorate this significant event in Portuguese history.

With a total length of 2,277 meters and a towering height of 190 meters above the water, the 25 de Abril Bridge is an impressive feat of engineering. It carries six road lanes as well as a railway line on a separate lower deck, facilitating the daily commute for thousands of residents and visitors alike.
