Jardim Florêncio Terra, Horta
Facts and practical information
The Florêncio Terra Garden is a garden located in the city of Horta, Faial Island, Azores Archipelago.
This garden, built in 1857 and that until 1964 was only called "Public Garden", owes its name to an attempt to honor Florêncio Terra who was born in the city of Horta on May 18, 1858 and died in the same city on November 25, 1941 and who stood out as a writer, publicist, teacher and Azorean politician. It is located in part of the former Convent and Church of São João, demolished after the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, taking advantage of an integral part of the gardens around it.
The garden is located at some height above the city of Horta, giving it a different perspective than usual. From here you can see the sea with the island of Pico right in front and where the imposing Pico Mountain stands out. It is here to highlight the existence of tree species protected by law as is the case of drago trees of advanced age and Araucaria trees of large size.
In the center of the garden is a pond with a bandstand dating from the second quarter of the 19th century surrounded by four statues.
Next to this garden is one of the best known monuments in Horta, the Clock Tower, as well as the headquarters of the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores.
