Arco da Vila, Faro
Facts and practical information
The Arco da Vila, a "remarkable" building in Faro, ordered to be built by Bishop D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar over one of the medieval doors in the walls, was built by the Genoese architect Francisco Xavier Fabri and inaugurated in 1812.
In the center is a niche with an image of St. Thomas Aquinas, of Italian origin. Inside, a horseshoe-shaped entrance from the Moorish walls, unique in the Algarve, is preserved. During renovation work carried out in 1992, a horseshoe gateway was reopened, which corresponded to an entrance in the old Moorish walls.
The Arco da Vila is one of the places in the city where it is usually possible to observe storks' nests.
