Facts and practical information
Fóia Mountain stands as the highest peak of the Monchique Range in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. Towering at an impressive altitude of 902 meters above sea level, Fóia is not only the tallest mountain in the Algarve but also offers some of the most breathtaking views of the region.
Visitors to Fóia Mountain can enjoy a panoramic vista that stretches far and wide, encompassing the Atlantic Ocean, the southern coast of Portugal, and on clear days, even glimpses of the distant Alentejo plains. The mountain is a magnet for nature lovers, hikers, and those looking to escape the bustling tourist resorts for a taste of Portugal's serene and verdant countryside.
The journey to the summit can be undertaken by car or through a network of hiking trails that meander through the lush, Mediterranean flora. The mountain's high elevation provides a cooler climate, offering a refreshing break from the Algarve's typically hot summers.
At the peak, visitors will find a radar station, which is part of Portugal's national defense system, as well as a small shop and café where local crafts and refreshments are available. For the more adventurous, Fóia Mountain is also a popular launching point for paragliding.
The mountain's rich biodiversity includes a variety of plant species, some of which are endemic to the region, and its slopes are dotted with traditional farms and picturesque villages, showcasing the rural Algarvian lifestyle.
