Reservatório da Patriarcal, Lisbon
Facts and practical information
The Patriarcal Reservoir is located in the basement of the Praça do Príncipe Real, and was designed in 1856 by French engineer Louis-Charles Mary. It was built between 1860 and 1864 to serve the city of Lisbon's water distribution network.
The reservoir with a capacity of 880 m³, has 31 pillars with 9.25 meters of these vaults and already in the garden in the shade of the outdoor trees, there is a pond with a fountain.
The location of the reservoir and its interior ambience led EPAL, through the Water Museum, with the support of Sociedade Lisboa 94, to carry out a restoration project, for which it is now the stage of several cultural initiatives, from shows, to painting, sculpture and photography exhibitions, among others.
The Patriarcal Reservoir was awarded the 1995 "Eugénio dos Santos" Municipal Architecture Prize.
The Patriarcal Reservoir is currently one of the four centers of the EPAL Water Museum in Lisbon.
